BBG: Hey SJ, howzit going?
SJ: Pretty good thanks. Just going for a surf. I’ve been writing exams all day.
BBG: Nice one, I hear you are in Matric? Are you a smarty pants or do you fit the stereotypical dumb surfer profile?
SJ: I don’t really know. I’m pretty lazy and miss lots of school because of travelling, but I still average around 70. I guess I'm quite a nerd.
BBG: So, we had a few shot’s land on our desk of you at Vic Bay. Are you training for the Billabong Junior Series Finale that runs there at the end of the month?
SJ: I go down there on off days and on weekends. Ja I'm doing a bit of training, because it’s a big event. It’s also just something different so I don’t get bored of surfing Mossels everyday.
BBG: Is the wave similar to your local spot and are you confident out there?
SJ: It’s only about a half an hour drive so it’s really easy to go to. I think it’s quite similar just a bit longer. It’s just a small little bay outside of George and the wave is really fun and forgiving so you can go really hard and try all the new school innovative stuff so it’s good.
BBG: And does school interfere with the training at all?
SJ: Not really, that’s why I go down there on the off days and weekends only.
BBG: Any plans after the Vic Bay Billabong Junior Series, or are you studying for finals?
SJ: I’m going to Bali for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge and then its finals.
BBG: Bali hey, sick, I recall you finished third there last year, is the event at the same wave and was it close to Kuta where you have to watch out for Benchongs?
SJ: Ja I think it’s at the same wave. It’s about an hour give or take depending on how crazy the driver is. Benchongs or hermaphrodites only come out at night, they’re really dodgy, so luckily I don’t have to see any before a paddle out for a heat.
BBG: Nice one, thanks for the chat, all the best for the two events and Matric Final’s. Hopefully you’ll be hearing from us when you win to give us the inside scoop of the events!
