It’s been said that Puerto Rico is the East Coast’s version of Hawaii: a tropical warm-water locale with tanned women, beautiful beaches, and punchy surf located just a short plane ride away from the depths of East Coast winter. For nearly five decades now, Puerto Rico’s been a place for Right Coast surfers to shake off the bits of winter frost and the thinned blood they’ve been accumulating among a bevy of rippable points and tepid beachbreaks. Since surfing first took root in the Spanish-speaking commonwealth in the 1950s, Puerto Rico has turned into a breeding ground for progressive talent. Piloting the ever growing—and in his case ever fearless—crop of young surfers calling the island home is 23-year-old Alejandro Moreda.
Growing up on the Rum Island, Alejandro is comfortably seated at the vanguard of the technical movement—a surfer at ease with fin whips, airs and rotations of the ultra-new school. His adventures around the world finding hollow tubes, long points and big wave slabs has proven him to be the hardest-charging Puerto Rican on record. Simply put, Alejandro’s about as well-rounded as they come; a surfer equally capable of punting a clean rotation at a fun beachbreak or pulling into deadly Backdoor barrels over dry reef.
In the past few winter seasons, Alejandro has been making the pilgrimage from Puerto Rico to the Sandwich Islands to test his mettle on the North Shore of Oahu. Judging from the photos and first-hand accounts of Alejandro’s exploits from some of the North Shore’s most respected locals, the kid’s made a real impression and is beginning to cement a name for himself as a fearless charger. But if you asked him about it, there’s a good chance he’d just shrug it off and change the subject, as the lad’s about as humble as they come.
In the coming months, look for Alejandro to continue whipping turns and heads alike. And come winter…look out, because Alejandro’s as committed as they come.
