Career Highlights: 1st Billabong pro jr hawaii, 6x nssa National champ
It's not often a rookie surfer gets compared to Bruce Irons in the style department, but that's exactly what the buzz was after Maui's Granger Larsen tore apart the Lower Trestles rights during this year's NSSA Nationals. From his unique hand positioning to his smooth cutbacks, critical observers were contending that Granger and Bruce have a lot in common besides just being from the Hawai'ian Islands.
Those may be strong claims, but watching Granger surf in the recent NSSA Nationals at Trestles proved the point. Larsen won every heat he surfed in save one, taking the 2008 titles in both the Explorer Junior’s and Explorer Men’s categories and placing 2nd in the Open Men’s (where he lost his only heat - the final.)
One of the dynamic young competitors coming out of the USA, his first major assignment was surfing in the Trials of the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay where he won a spot in the main event. He made it to the second round where he was defeated by 3-time world champ Andy Irons.
Currently he is preparing for the Junior World Championships in January, hoping to win it (and short-circuit some of the long, hard grind on the WQS).
Granger's posse on Maui - guys like Clay Marzo, Cheyne Magnusson, Dusty Payne, and Granger's older brother, Wesley - is one of the most talented and progressive groups of surfers to ever come out of Maui. Pushing each other every session, these young surfers have raised the bar and blown away the competition.
Granger has surfed since he was four years old in the idyllic Maui surf scene, with a crew of friends who seem to have no limits to their success, A Honolua Bay regular, Granger lives with his family in Kapalua, Maui, where he just finished High School. Although he loves to surf at Trestles (his choice spot in California) and has taken a recent trip to the Mentawai’s, his favorite break is still the fabled Honolua Bay, right at the bottom of the hill from his home.
In addition to competing in select events on the ASP WQS Series around the world, Larsen will also be starring in Billabong’s next film feature “Pinch My Saly” which will debut next Fall.
Look for him to blow up in the near future.
