Born into a surfing family, there was little chance Keanu Asing wasn’t going to grow up and rip. The regularfooter was practically raised in the nostalgic lineups of Oahu’s South Shore, and thanks to a bit of coaching by his dad, Tommy, as well as a fair bit of natural talent, Keanu’s about as polished a surfer can be for his age. A fervent competitor, for the second year in a row, he won the Boy’s division of the Haleiwa International Surfing Championships, as well as made the final in the Junior Men’s. Thanks to some good parenting and a fair bit of travel already under his belt, Keanu has seen that there’s more to life than just winning in Hawaii. “I had one kid who came in from a contest heat crying. I asked why. She said, ‘…because I lost.’” explained Tommy in a recent article in the Honolulu Advertiser. “I told her she had so many great things left, her friends, her family, a day at the beach. I want the kids to not just be great surfers, but be great people. What you do only lasts for so long. Who you are is forever.”
