5 Q'S WITH TJ BARRON
TJ Barron 5 Questions:
As a constant standout on the North Shore, TJ Barron has been an iconic image in the surf media since the Endless Summer II. Well, it’s safe to say that TJ’s come a long way from ripping Pupukea as a grom to where he is now as the lad has cemented himself a standout figure in the Backdoor Fraternity, pulling into some of the meatiest kegs of the winter. As the weather’s gone to complete crap lately on the North Shore, we sat down with TJ to get his take on why Hawaii reigns supreme and hear about his standout sessions of the year.
So it seems like you’re kind of growing into a legend on the North Shore these days. Can you run us through what it’s like growing up over there?
Yeah, for sure. The North Shore is an awesome place to live. It’s a really family-oriented place. Like, for instance, going to the beach. I can remember as a kid just going to the beach all day as a family. Literally all day…like we’d all eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at the beach. The whole family. I’d just surf all day and eat food. It’s epic. Definitely one of the best places to grow up.
Let’s say you couldn’t live in Hawaii for some reason, where would you want to post up?
Hmm, probably California cause that’s where all the money seems to be at. [laughs.] Plus my grandma lives in Whittier. And the waves get pretty fun too.
So we’re coming up on the last few months of winter on the North Shore, how’s the ’08/09 winter been for you so far?
It’s been pretty good. We’ve had some funky weather here and there, but there’s been some really good days too. Not the best ever, but not too bad.
Have you had any standout sessions that stick out in your mind?
Yeah, I’ve had some pretty innovative sessions out at Haleiwa, trying to get pretty technical and stuff. I’ve also had some solid days at Backdoor too. That was cool.
I actually just got back from Barbados and we had some good surf there. I went with Torrey Meister and a few other Billabong guys. They were ripping hard and that always makes you want to surf better.
What do you have in the works for the rest of the year?
I’m off to Tasmania and then Australia, West OZ, and then South Africa for a string of contests. I’m looking forward to it for sure. I like to travel and see other places. Getting to places like South Africa is kind of a pain, but once you’re there, it’s cool. Nice change of pace and scenery.
