Peter Mendia Scores at Home and Abroad
Billabong team rider Peter Mendia, got a rare opportunity to score waves coming and going this month. Quite possibly one of the most underrated barrel hunters of today's underappreciated pros, Peter had just returned from a little jaunt to Costa Rica (the Floridians love Costa like Californians love Baja) only to find a swell in his own backyard.
"I was all charged up from getting good waves in Costa. To go straight into clean waves at home is a big plus, surfing with your friends and family is the greatest — you feel your best at home," says Mendia.
Just off the plane, Mendia happened into some fun drifty ones in his home state of Florida. And locals in his area had a little break this year, as most college students had to forgo their annual craziness in Daytona and Cocoa Beach.
"The last swell had some fun size with a little wind bump in it. That actually made it a lot more fun. Only on the East Coast can a little wind sometimes make it better. We surfed a random spot that we used to surf when we were groms. There was a rip with a fun right and a good rip-able left," Mendia adds.
Later this year Peter will be back on the Billabong Camps “Surf With A Pro’ trips, so watch for a chance to take a surf expedition with one of the East Coast’s most entertaining surf stars, as well as one of the most respected. Book early, his trips fill up quick.
