While all the attention focuses on the guys and the Billabong Pro, let’s not forget the fairer sex who are still out there charging.
What does an average weekday consist of for Tarryn?
In summer it’s a run along Sea Point promenade or dawnie at Glen, then college from 8.30-5pm. Arvie is just surf, cook, sleep! Winter I am a little scared of the cold so haven’t had too many morning runs or surfs.
What does an average weekend day consist of?
I have joined the forces with the weekend warriors (studying full time at Red & Yellow) so my weekends are spent mostly in Kommetjie at my parents surfing as much as possible or Cam and myself might do a day mission up either the west or east coast.
Where do you do most of your surfing?
Probably Long Beach still, its been my local spot pretty much since I started surfing, but living in town has definitely broaden my horizons, there are some super fun waves along Sea Point and Llandudno.
What do you do when the water becomes really cold, as it does sometimes in Kommetjie?
I have come to the conclusion that my internal thermometer is bust - I get SOOOO cold it’s a joke. So pretty much every time I venture out into the Atlantic I rubber up - 4/3, booties and sometimes a hood if the winds blowing down at the Dune ... seriously thinking of investing in gloves though.
What are your goals right now?
My goals for this year are to surf the local PST and win, ideally. I wanted a win at S.A Champs as well as that is the only division I haven’t won but unfortunately that didn’t quite come together. My biggest goal though is pretty much to surf and promote a healthy and happy lifestyle, I love my blog so this years’ Blog Awards I think I might enter and see how that goes. Finishing my first year of Art Direction and Design with an exemption is also on the cards - working hard at that.
When were you born and thus how old are you?
9th of February 1990, which makes me 22
If you weren’t a surfer what would you be?
More than likely I would be headed on the same path with Art Direction/Design or doing some other incredibly competitive water sport.
How many sugars in your coffee and tea and why?
If it’s a good Flat White none otherwise half a spoon of brown (depending how terrible the coffee is). I usually have half a spoon of honey in my tea. With my sweet tooth, pretending no sugar in my coffee will save my teeth from decay helps me sleep at night.
Five people over for dinner, alive or dead. Who are they and why?
Jamie Oliver (I like food), Kelly Slater (heard he is super weird but maybe I could pry some winning thoughts from that alien head), Audrey Kawasaki (I am inspired by the beautiful way she creates paintings and illustrations), Cameron (boyfriend for moral support I am a tiny bit of a hermit so new people could scare me) and last but not least Helen Zille. I would find it fascinating to chat to a politician, specially a successful woman. She seems to have done a lot for the DA and the Western Province
What band is performing?
Mumford and Sons.
What are you wearing?
I would probably wear a little Billabong summer Dress, my Billabong Military Boots, Leather jacket and Nixon small player because a little diamond is a girls’ best friend.
Out of control?
I think Helen Zille for sure.
Who is the bouncer?
That scary guy the Hound or whatever from Game of Thrones! Nobody would be gate crashing my party.
What is for brekkie for the morning after?
Definitely bicycle ride all the way downhill to Clarkes Diner for a Flat White and scrambled eggs, bacon and Swiss chard on rye toast.
