Joana Rocha
NATIONALITY: Portuguese
HOME TOWN: Ericeira
FAVORITE WAVE: Snappers
FAVORITE COUNTRY: Australia
ACTIVITIES: Pro Surfer, student in mechanical engineering, organiser of the Billabong Girls Days in Portugal with her sister Rita
Joana started surfing at 15 thanks to the support of her parents and her friends who all practised surfing and body boarding. Spending her summer holidays in Ericeira at her grandparents house also contributed to making her become a “surf addict” like her sister Rita.
She began competing at 16 and started travelling all over the world to push her surfing. Further travels have taken her to Costa Rica, Azores, Madeira, Maldives, Canary Island, Morocco, Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, Morea, England, Spain, Argentine, Mexico and Brazil!! She expects to go to Indonesia for her next surf trip…all added to her engineering studies and many surf contests! Let’s say Joana is all but slothful.
She also loves organizing surf girl’s events with her sister to reach female’s surfers.
Joanna’s Competition Highlights:
2 x Junior National Champion
2 x Vice Junior National Champion
Joana thinks the coolest thing about surfing is travelling with her friends and discovering new cultures. She plans to live in another country in future, wants to continue to develop women’s surfing and travelling. Being better at surfing and living happily is what she dreams of!
