One of Europe’s most electric and progressive surfers, Reubyn Ash was always destined to make his mark in the Atlantic and beyond. “I started surfing when I was in nappies. My whole family surf and my dad used to take me out when I was a toddler. He used to put a leash around his waste and stick me on his back, paddle into waves himself and then take me off his back and put me on the front of the surfboard. I was catching by myself by the time I was 3.”
No wonder then by the time he was 18 he had won more than 10 British titles, as well as a European junior championship. However while he was undergoing the traditional junior competitive route, Reubyn was also experimenting with his aerial act, at a time when very few surfers his age were even contemplating them.
“I started getting in the air before most people even were into that type of surfing,” says Ash. “Nowadays I love to try to come up with different stuff to what’s already out there and really push the limits. I don’t hold back when I am surfing, going harder and faster and higher is what gets me amped.”
