KHAIRIL IBRAHIM

Sponsors : BILLABONG, VZ

Stance : Goofy

Favorite spot to surf :  If I tell you, I’ll have to kill you.  Somewhere in Malaysia...and it’s world class

Vehicle : Nissan Navarra

Pets : Truffle (Golden retriever - I know it’s a gay name, my girlfriend named her), Daisy (beagle puppy, ditto)

Favorite food :  Famous Amos.  Piggy’s on poppies 2 at 4am. Rice & ikan masin if I’ve been away from home too long.

Who or what gets you amped? Chendor on a good day.

Person you most respect : Me!

Which word phrases do you most overuse? Chop you up and throw you in the ocean...(yeah Pete, that one’s for you)

What is the most embarassing thing that has ever happened to you? Too cool for school – don’t get embarrassed.

What is the craziest thing you've ever done? Padang to Mentawais (160k of open ocean) in a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the night with no compass or GPS with a bunch of fisherman who had no clue where they were going

Tell me the best thing about Malaysia? Me. Ha, just kidding. Perfect cylindrical sand-bottom point breaks, that’s what.

What motto do you live by? Live, don’t exist.  Well, that’s the Satusuku tag, anyway!

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Telescopes pumping and no one around

Tell me something most people don't know about you? I can’t dance.

Khairil is probably the whitest Malaysian in Malaysia. Born to a Malaysian dad and an English mum, he grew up on the family island and spent his life in the ocean - fishing, diving, sailing, and skipping school. He started surfing in the KL wave pool when he was 12, and that was it. A friend took him to the little-known village of Cherating on the east coast of Malaysia, where he met Mamat who introduced him to real surfing, and he never looked back.

Khairil has spent the last five years traveling around Asia and Indo surfing, though always returning to Malaysia to spend the monsoon season surfing his home breaks. He has been the principal driver in raising the profile of Malaysian surf, and has worked closely with Billabong over the last few years to bring his country (and its world-class waves) onto the global stage.

In 2007 he started Satusuku Surf School, the only surf school in Malaysia. In 2010 Satusuku and Billabong brought Occy to Malaysia for the first time to host the inaugural Occy Grom Comp at Cherating, alongside the annual Billabong Cherating Pro-Am which has been running since 2009.  Khairil is President of the Malaysian Surfing Association, the official ISA contact for Malaysia, and with his dedication and passion can truly be called the Godfather of Malaysian surf.
