Barefoot bowl riders ripping it in the Turkey Bowl with Billabong

MC Sakrot entertaining the crowd

As promised, the “Gerupuk Skate Classic” has become a regular event! On the 26th of November, the Gerupuk Classic III” was held at Surfcamp Lombok and once again it attracted super talented kids, many spectators from the surrounding villages and visiting tourists. DJ Fat Ollie and MC Sakrot entertained the crowd with local and international tunes and bilingual commentary while the all-star panel of judges had a tricky task of judging the big number of talented participants. As previous competitions, the event was divided into six categories; Girls, Under 14 Boys, Open, Best Slam, Best Surfstyle and Best trick.

A week before the event took place, the children were coached by Jeremy, a canadian skater traveling through Indonesia and stopping by Lombok only because he had heard about the Turkey Bowl (!). The kids were stoked to learn some new tricks and to have someone coaching and supporting them for the event. Jeremy got to show a few tricks on his own in between heats and so did also Tim and Fi, two guests staying at the camp entertaining the crowd with their circus skills including hula-hoops, diablos and juggling balls!

Using the event as an opportunity to send a message out about waste awareness, the Surfcamp Lombok Foundation arranged a waste exhibition showing how long it takes for waste materials to decompose. As a side kick and help to get the message out, the comp also had its own mascot, the funny (and slightly frightening.. =) “Jagah Sampah” or “Waste Guard”, who not only chased litterers with a broom but also bravely took a drop in the bowl!

The Surfcamp and Surfcamp Lombok Foundation would like to thank Billabong, 69 Slam and Nord for participating and sponsoring the event with amazing prices. The winners were stoked to receive watches, towels, shorts, t-shirts, key chains and a lot of other cool stuff -terima kasih banyak!

The barefoot Turkey Bowl is really a part of everyday life for the village kids in Gerupuk and it is wonderful to share their enthusiasm for skating, playing and competing.

Now we are already looking forward to Gerupuk Skate Classic IV!
